Finding your happiness, improve your reality.

“There were two ways to be happy: improve your reality, or lower your expectations.” Jodi Picoult

“The person born with a talent they are meant to use will find their greatest happiness in using it.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Finding your happiness.

We may live on this gorgeous wonderful planet but we struggle to find happiness. It is true when you see what your reality of your life is and connect to life lowering your expectations can never be part of any equation. Look for the truth in all things and you will be amazed how happy and freeing you will become. The truth is you are part of an amazing Universal plan that you alone designed. Recognize what it is you alone excel at, the thing you do with absolute ease, your talent, and stick with it for this will bring you satisfaction and ultimately happiness.

Discovering.

Today I discovered a truth many do not like to see. Being lied and manipulated by incorrect information is something we all dislike. This feeling is not one I will hold onto but want to share with those who keep believing they can make their etsy shops work. Thinking if only I do this or join this e-course for answers or you need to change pictures headings or descriptions to succeed. The simple truth is etsy caters to those who bring etsy the money in sales and they do not care if it is handmade or not. So stop lowering your expectations and selling your work for less than it is worth and focus on how to produce the absolute best product you can for people who want it.

I recently experimented with etsy sections (you know the categories on the side) on the main page. I paint watercolors and I have sold several recently so I wanted to see what would happen. I clicked the art link then the watercolor link and the first second and third pages never change. Same people same art. So I thought maybe this work is recent and just added to the massive collection of prints being sold under the umbrella of handmade original art. What I discovered is no. Now if I do my individual search I come up with my work and some other gorgeous original work by other artists I also never saw on the etsy main page for watercolor under art.

I want to share this new discovery.

There are some awesome artist on etsy but they are being weighed down by the print market and the resellers on this infamous site of do what we say unless we say it is OK to cheat. People who have sold with etsy for a long time are jumping ship and establishing other means to show their work. Somewhere this site lost its vision and why it was started in the beginning and because they did many more are feeling the effects with less views and dismal sales. It is a ripple effect that is not going to stop and eventually the wonderful handmade site for handmade creative work will be no more. That makes me sad.

I am an artist and I do beautiful custom work in many different mediums. I was born with this talent and I am not going to lower my expectation of what my work can bring me because of one over rated store site. I am not sour (though it may sound like it) about this site but reality finally set in. I can do better. I see the truth about this site. How much it can do for me? Not very much.

Establish yourself and create your own web presence.

I am in control of my happiness by working on my talents and I control how my talents are shown to others. I am competing only against me to improve and become a better person and better artist. This is why I am investing my time in developing my web site. Promote only my work and gain more time to enjoy life.

Stop looking at how can I and say I can.

“Learn to get in touch with the silence within yourself, and know that everything in life has purpose. There are no mistakes, no coincidences, all events are blessings given to us to learn from.”  – Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

There was a time a very short time ago I thought this was an absolute truth and then last weekend I had a visitor. Someone I had not seen or heard from for many years. We would spend hours conversing about life little mysteries and how we assumed the Universe worked and didn’t work.

Again I found our conversations to lean towards how meditation and being in silence within yourself will lead to your purpose. Though so many do follow with this thinking , so many never feel they understand what their purpose is and feel somehow guilty they don’t get it. There are mistakes made and not all events are blessings. Are there coincidences to the working of your life? Absolutely not. Experiences are not for us to learn from but to feel and expand the world we create. Athletes call it getting in the zone while an artist might refer to it as getting in touch with their muse. What it is simply stated is being in connection to the working energy of an expanding creating intelligent consciousness some call God, Universe or Divine Goddess. I find it humorous when we try to name this huge wonderful amazing energy of thought energy and emotion, there really is no name to convey it all.

As a working artist I try to get my work out to people who might enjoy my work. Another part of my life is selling this home I live in at the moment. Both are very frustrating and I see very little coming from much work. A house sells a few doors down from my home and I feel horrible and I check in to my Etsy shop to find another disappointment. My visitor reminded me that not all things happen the way you expect them to and not all things happen right when you want them to. Maybe there is something you need to do still in this place something I am not aware of yet. I needed to learn to trust the Universe and above all trust I will get to where I want to go in time. I needed to trust myself. It all came down to trust.

I have tons of faith and hope but lack in the key to allowing things to form and work for me in my life. Trust is the thread that binds it together. Trust is being vulnerable and open. Now I am working on trust. I look for the little subtle signs my visitor said to look for and I see the signs are slight whispers, usually having nothing to do with what you are doing but they catch your eye or attention. I am learning to trust my gut, my intuition, my connection to the energy around and within me. I am finding a new sense of fun thrill and excitement with every new day, and at my age that is pretty awesome.

Let me finish with stop looking for a purpose and get out and live, feel touch and be the best you. You are going to fail and you are going to make mistakes. Get over it and look for the sign posts that guide you along your unique path. Stop looking at how can I and say I can. You will always get to where you are supposed to be because you intended it that way. Have fun doing it.

Botanical garden watercolor original painting titled Black-Eyed Susan in the Field. A watercolor of detailed woodland wildflowers painted by Laurie Rohner.

Bright summer botanical garden or wildflowers beam out at you off the paper. Cheery happy and spirit lifting for a summer farmhouse cottage.

My watercolor technique is glazing a process where I layer pigments on top of each other creating depth and realism in my paintings. This painting has up to 10 layers. I love the opaqueness and luminosity I achieve so that the flowers make you want to reach out and touch them.

Title: Black-eyed Susans in a Field.

You don’t have reason to be happy—make it up.

We are really advocates of just getting as happy as you can be—which takes care of everything. Even if you don’t have reason to be happy—make it up. Fantasize it. Make a decision that you’re going to be happy one way or another—no matter what. “No matter what, I’m going to be happy! If I have to ignore everybody; if I have to never watch television again; if I have to never pick up a newspaper again, I’m going to be happy. If I never have to see that person’s face again, I’m going to be happy. If I have to see that person’s face, I’m going to find something to see in that person’s face that makes me happy. I’m going to be happy. I’m going to be happy. I’m going to be happy.” —Abraham

Babbling Brook in Vermont
Babbling Brook in Vermont

This is my happy place. Water intense color and nature all around exploding making my senses alive. This little painting hangs on the wall by my computer. It is a reminder. Where I am and where I need to return to now. Not that exact place but to that feeling and emotion of joy delight and happiness. Simple if you know where the switch is to turn life on. Happy is simple and when you feel happy hold it, explore it, revel in it and know it. When things slip and you become a little doubtful and you will because life is a work always in progress, you can bring up the emotion you now are intimately joined to and happiness will elevate you back to the right path in your life.

Get to know happy and hang on tight for the ride of your lifetime.

Decide what your highest priorities are and have courage.

“You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage – pleasantly, smilingly, non-apologetically – to say ‘no’ to other things.  And the way to do that is by having a bigger ‘yes’ burning inside.  The enemy of the ‘best’ is often the ‘good.’”  Stephen Covey, best-selling author of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

All my life I have heard how lucky I was to be an artist. I hated hearing those words because the words belittle the work of any creative being. Knowingly or not people who work in the creative fields tend to have low self-esteem, constantly seeking out affirmation that there work, which for many artists there soul expression, matters. Artists seek confirmation in various ways and often those ways come up short. What I have learned is to decide if your work is important to you and are you doing everything you can to produce the best work every time you create. If so then the next step is to mark your highest priorities and have the courage your soulful true self knows what it is doing.

Having faith in the world or in your religious belief is fine but knowing the big yes inside on an intimate level is everything. The divine universe requires nothing but a decision and a plan for you to achieve everything. Being good enough is not an option in my life anymore but being the ‘best’, I am sweetly smiling. This does not mean I am the best at what I do but I do the best I can for myself every time. Saying no when you know that one thing does not fit your priorities in your life. Instead of blindly looking at the IPad or talking to a friend via the Smartphone say no and work at you and your life. You are worth the effort and you are the only one who is the best at being you.

So why did I hate hearing how lucky I was to be an artist? Because it is easy to give up and follow the norm in life, get a real job, work every day mindlessly, get married, have the kids, and you can always paint as a hobby. No I cannot and I tried for years to do just that, failing miserably. I work very hard at my job. This is not easy. This is not fun. This IS fulfilling and purposeful work. Many years of study is applied to a creative work.  Art is serving the soul in each of us. Art speaks to the soul and through the soul it speaks to all creation. It is why people say his or her work speaks to me. I work to feed the creative energy shared by all things. That is the burning ‘yes’ inside every creative person. My work matters, and your work matters. Remember when you head off to the office or to the studio or to the kitchen to tend to your family to do your absolute best and never less. Not THE absolute best, YOUR absolute best.

Vibrate the Cosmos, the Cosmos shall clear the Path.

Five Laws for Our Times:

1. Recognize that the other person is you.

2. There is a way through every block.

3. When the time is on you, start, and the pressure will be off.

4. Understand through compassion or you will misunderstand the times.

5. Vibrate the Cosmos, the Cosmos shall clear the Path.

Vermont Oil Painting Original Scenic Landscape Artwork by Laurie Rohner Mt Mansfield
Vermont Original Scenic Landscape Oil Painting by Laurie Rohner.

Vermont Original Scenic Landscape Oil Painting by Laurie Rohner.
A realistic Vermont landscape original oil painting is titled Pastures below Mt Mansfield. I painted this detailed scenic landscape on a 10″ x 10″ stretched canvas.

A summer scene of picturesque Vermont depicting Mount Mansfield in the distance and a wonderful Vermont farmhouse and barn in the foreground. I painted this pastoral landscape with detailed realism, the richness of the pasture in direct contrast to the image of the mountain peak in the distance. My use of color draws the viewer into the painting where you discover the quaint farmhouse and the barn on the ridge.

Color palette: blue, light leaf green, rich deep green, golden yellows, barn red, soft teal green, flaxen yellow.

The painting is signed and dated on the reverse and arrives Unframed. Ready to hang!

The painting measures 10 X 10 inches on wrapped canvas (3/4″ deep) with staples on the back. The painting has a beautiful color and a great finish from high quality oil paints.

The staple-free sides of the canvas are painted. The painting continues around to the sides – framing is not required.

When you’re happy for no reason, you bring happiness.

“When you’re happy for no reason, you bring happiness to your outer experiences rather than trying to extract happiness from them. You don’t need to manipulate the world around you to try to make yourself happy. You live from happiness, rather than for happiness.”

Marci Shimoff, is a motivational speaker and author. This quote comes from her book Happy For No Reason.

Image from photoity.com

Animals are best at showing us being happy for no reason. It is obvious this polar bear is very content and happy. You can see the connection that happiness is making with the woman.

Again happy face, the connection is in the being and sharing of each other lives. Happy and being happy connects human beings on the soul level of all life.

This is a favorite image.

But there are times when no humans are necessary. Animals always know that connection and live from a happy place no matter what their circumstances. Lessons fellow humans can learn.

Surrounded by the wrong people is the loneliest place in the world.

Sometimes don’t you feel this way?

I can fully understand what these words are saying and know there are people who agree, feel the tug at their own hearts. There is no blame. No one is at fault for your circumstances. You made a choice and that choice put you in the situation, now behind the loneliness you know you are in the midst of the wrong people for your life and now you feel trapped. In my situation I have found myself in a wonderful neighborhood but the wrong people. It took me 5 years to see the obvious. When you go off course and head down the wrong road you end up in a lovely town but the wrong people living there aren’t the neighbors or town. It is you. Figure out who you are and get back on the road, finding the right people in your life.

Spirit, the Universe is showing you to start moving and it is never too late or impossible to correct your situation. Staying is the worst thing you can do and nothing will get better. I have realized this hard lesson but I also believe I am back on the right road again. I am selling my home and relocating back to Vermont. Check out my house for sale site. It wasn’t until my heart broke wide open did I see my truth and what will it take for you to find yours?
