Etsy Versus Something Else?

whitefield card for shop

I have struggled with this question, stay with Etsy or leave? I say go. I have worked with square marketplace and with weebly for some time. I enjoy the marketplace at square. It is simple to use and to set up with options to embed your marketplace and product in your website. My website also has an online store using PayPal but I like the direct deposit I have set up with square. When Etsy sent me an email asking me to link my PayPal account into Etsy direct pay I decided time to sever the store from my marketing strategy.

Most aren’t aware of the deceptive practice this implies, which is you pay PayPal and Etsy a combined percentage of nearly 6% per sale. Plus there is a security issue I am concerned with, Etsy is not the most secure site but PayPal I am completely confident using their shopping cart. I want my customers a safe shopping experience and if I am not confident using Etsy then why should I ask them to be?

Do you sell on Etsy?

Did you know Etsy went public and offered stock options on the NY stock exchange? Fabulous for Etsy but this leaves the shops asking why? Etsy was a new exciting way for artists designers and all creatives of handmade quality product to sell to the world on one easy platform. The brilliant creator of Etsy sold the company and since that day it has never been the same. What made Etsy different exciting and the place for all to shop for fabulous handmade original product vanished. Many of my customers will not shop there anymore. Now it is a place like all the rest, over-run with knock off mass-produced. If you were willing to go the route of what Etsy has pushed as wholesale you might still be able to stay on top of the herd. I doubt it.

Visit Between The Weeds

Etsy is a business but I am a business too. They have the right to do and work the way they see fit. I am also a business that can choose what and where I sell my product. After a considerable time I studied and analysed the cost and time needed to keep my shop on Etsy finding my Etsy shop is running in the red. Bottom line is, Etsy is not working for me anymore.

My new brand for Between The Weeds Studio and Laurie Rohner Studio

What is working is my web site. I have two. First at Laurie Rohner Studio and the second at Between The Weeds. I have integrated the two web sites together and have started branding my image and work. Now when I promote my work only my work is promoted. No check out other work on my site directing a potential customer off to another shop. I cannot say more explicitly, you need your own web site. How much money do you give Etsy a month on listing fees? There are a bunch of web site you can create and you probably wont spend as much. I use weebly but also  have checked into wix and square. I just love weebly and have used them from the beginning.

Images help promote your work.

Stop trying to get your views up on Etsy, that will not help. Stop trying to list something everyday. Stop using any of the other old outdated tricks of days long ago, again not working. Sit down make a list of what you want to showcase on a web site and get one built. Believe me if I can do it, you can do it. Make it a fun project and not a chore. Have inspiration flowing and be creative. Another great plus is you can change it around when you want.

An art studio for a woodland fairy to sit and create along side you.

Just as nature starts to awaken from the long slumber of the winter months the fairies start to reappear. There is much work to do. Are you watching? Have you noticed the flicker of light under the pine branch? Now is the time, help nature and all its wonderful creatures and beings to awaken.

Want to help? How about a fairy house for the fairies to relax and do what they love to do, create magic.

On the other side is a fairy computer and tablet with a few old-fashioned books in the corner set upon a drift wood table with chair. The floor has a natural woven rug and on the back wall are cedar panels.

The roof is from branches and strewn across are pebbles, cones, sea glass, and raffia in a bow.

The roof is from branches and strewn across are pebbles, cones, sea glass, and raffia in a bow. The cones are separated and form shingles to help prevent the weather from coming in.

Pine cone frame the window on solid cedar wood.

The sides and back also have decorative cone shingles. I glue each and every piece you see in place by hand.

This is a custom handmade woodland fairy house sculpted from wood pine cones sea glass pebbles and natural finds.

Dimensions: 13 x 11 x 7 inches
Weight 5 lbs.

Note: All my houses are blessed by a fairy.
I also enclose the name of the fairy so keep your eyes out for the fairy.

I wrap each house carefully with tissue on the inside of the houses and then the entire house is wrapped in brown paper. But be careful unwrapping these beautiful sculpted work of art.

Today. Today I embrace my intuition.

This year started with a feeling that this was going to be a grand year, full of new exciting profitable projects and selling my studio home. It is November and I still am waiting for someone to buy this home. I am still waiting to sink my teeth into that new exciting project. I am still living in a place called limbo town. With each hour day and month I have grown more anxious and fearful that my timeline won’t be met. I wake every morning with hope seeking for an answer only to flop into the bed at night totally exhausted and stressed. My body aches from the stress and my mind is on its own continuous loop never disengaging making getting a good nights sleep not so possible. Yet today I got up thinking today is different. Today is different because it is today.

Today I stop waiting. Today I start doing. Today I start allowing. Today I stop controlling. Today is new and exciting. Today is the project I have searched for starts to give birth. Today when I fall into bed I will be tired not from stress and dreams unrealized but from working and creating in complete synergy of my life. No restrictions. Today I am co-creating my story.

No more thinking it through or is this being realistic? Being realistic and thinking it through got me to this point and well that did not work out to well for me. Today I embrace my intuition, my soul whispers, the little signs you only see when you stop pretending they are not there. Today my belief in the divine plan exists is my guide. Today it all begins, an epic journey, is today your today?

Quotes

And the veil gets thinner.

I love this time of year and not just because the leaves shine in an array of gorgeous color. Number one reason is I love ghosts, spooky things that go bump in the night  and whispers you hear in the air. This is the time of year when the veil between our realities gets thinner. You catch a glimpse of a shadow in the corner of your eye and tell yourself it was nothing. Maybe you hear someone talking low and barely audible only to say it must be coming from outside or next door but of course some reason certainly not a spirit or ghost. This is a common occurrence in my world and I have come to accept it as normal. I think you would call that being an Intuit but it is just being a bit more sensitive to energy around you.  I also have great respect for the things I cannot see and never play around with spirit games such as séance and Ouija  boards. I accept their presence it is real. I think of these spirits as guides ancestors and angels and they are here to aid and help us. It is only when you open the portals and gates to dark negative energies that negative spirit enters. Unfortunately it is not a game and the negative energy can now hang out and play. I wonder if you know how many spirits and guides are with you at this moment? You may be surprised.

What is new at Between The Weeds? Pet portraits.

Have a portrait painted of your loved pet.

I am working on paintings for the studio. This is so exciting. I am now working on pet portraits. I am having a blast. The house smells with oil paints and the creative energy is soaring. I really can say I have never met an animal I did not like. Humans too many but dogs cats pigs sheep cows horses lion and tigers and bears, oh my, never ever.

Recently I had this amazing person pop into my life and instantly liked her. She lives with a menagerie of animals secretly I am jealous because I would love to live surrounded by furry feathered friends. I do draw a line with reptiles, especially snakes. She told me she had just lost her dog. The love she had for her dog beamed out from every pore and you could also feel the sadness. I was immediately touched and knew I would have to do something.

I had been frustrated with my shop and what I was doing with my art. I had toyed with the idea to start painting pet portraits again. The next time I saw this new found friend I mentioned about my interest in getting back to painting pets and would she like one in memory of her dog? One thing led to another and I am working on a portrait.

But to get the muscle exercised I worked first on a smaller portrait of a very special guy in my life. His name was Woody, or Sweet Woodruff his pedigree name. Woody was my spirit dog. He always could tell what I was thinking and there was not a day he did not give me all the love and joy he could muster.

portrait of Woody from photo

This is a 10 x 10 inch stretched canvas original oil painting I did from a photo of Woody. I chose to use blues purples highlighted with orange, yellow and light blue. To create the depth I used Paynes Gray with a touch of Umber and Ultramarine Blue. What gives this portrait the emotion and spirit is the eye (or eyes). I start with the eyes and work the rest in from there. The painting is finished with detailing around the eye (s) and highlights were needed.

This is a close up of the face.

detailing of the eye.

Would you like a portrait painted of you pet? Various sizes can be done in many mediums. I am now working on oil paintings and pricing is flexible depending on the subject. How it works is simple. You supply a favorite photo showing your animal and half of the agreed amount of painting. Add a brief story about your pet and I will paint a painting. About 3/4 through the painting I will send you a shot of the work in progress for your approval. Once OK’d I will add the detail work and make any adjustments. When it is finished and waiting to dry so I can varnish the painting you send the last payment. The painting is shipped to you ready to hang along with your photos (if you sent them by snail mail).
