Stop looking at how can I and say I can.

“Learn to get in touch with the silence within yourself, and know that everything in life has purpose. There are no mistakes, no coincidences, all events are blessings given to us to learn from.”  – Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

There was a time a very short time ago I thought this was an absolute truth and then last weekend I had a visitor. Someone I had not seen or heard from for many years. We would spend hours conversing about life little mysteries and how we assumed the Universe worked and didn’t work.

Again I found our conversations to lean towards how meditation and being in silence within yourself will lead to your purpose. Though so many do follow with this thinking , so many never feel they understand what their purpose is and feel somehow guilty they don’t get it. There are mistakes made and not all events are blessings. Are there coincidences to the working of your life? Absolutely not. Experiences are not for us to learn from but to feel and expand the world we create. Athletes call it getting in the zone while an artist might refer to it as getting in touch with their muse. What it is simply stated is being in connection to the working energy of an expanding creating intelligent consciousness some call God, Universe or Divine Goddess. I find it humorous when we try to name this huge wonderful amazing energy of thought energy and emotion, there really is no name to convey it all.

As a working artist I try to get my work out to people who might enjoy my work. Another part of my life is selling this home I live in at the moment. Both are very frustrating and I see very little coming from much work. A house sells a few doors down from my home and I feel horrible and I check in to my Etsy shop to find another disappointment. My visitor reminded me that not all things happen the way you expect them to and not all things happen right when you want them to. Maybe there is something you need to do still in this place something I am not aware of yet. I needed to learn to trust the Universe and above all trust I will get to where I want to go in time. I needed to trust myself. It all came down to trust.

I have tons of faith and hope but lack in the key to allowing things to form and work for me in my life. Trust is the thread that binds it together. Trust is being vulnerable and open. Now I am working on trust. I look for the little subtle signs my visitor said to look for and I see the signs are slight whispers, usually having nothing to do with what you are doing but they catch your eye or attention. I am learning to trust my gut, my intuition, my connection to the energy around and within me. I am finding a new sense of fun thrill and excitement with every new day, and at my age that is pretty awesome.

Let me finish with stop looking for a purpose and get out and live, feel touch and be the best you. You are going to fail and you are going to make mistakes. Get over it and look for the sign posts that guide you along your unique path. Stop looking at how can I and say I can. You will always get to where you are supposed to be because you intended it that way. Have fun doing it.

Botanical garden watercolor original painting titled Black-Eyed Susan in the Field. A watercolor of detailed woodland wildflowers painted by Laurie Rohner.

Bright summer botanical garden or wildflowers beam out at you off the paper. Cheery happy and spirit lifting for a summer farmhouse cottage.

My watercolor technique is glazing a process where I layer pigments on top of each other creating depth and realism in my paintings. This painting has up to 10 layers. I love the opaqueness and luminosity I achieve so that the flowers make you want to reach out and touch them.

Title: Black-eyed Susans in a Field.

Decide what your highest priorities are and have courage.

“You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage – pleasantly, smilingly, non-apologetically – to say ‘no’ to other things.  And the way to do that is by having a bigger ‘yes’ burning inside.  The enemy of the ‘best’ is often the ‘good.’”  Stephen Covey, best-selling author of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

All my life I have heard how lucky I was to be an artist. I hated hearing those words because the words belittle the work of any creative being. Knowingly or not people who work in the creative fields tend to have low self-esteem, constantly seeking out affirmation that there work, which for many artists there soul expression, matters. Artists seek confirmation in various ways and often those ways come up short. What I have learned is to decide if your work is important to you and are you doing everything you can to produce the best work every time you create. If so then the next step is to mark your highest priorities and have the courage your soulful true self knows what it is doing.

Having faith in the world or in your religious belief is fine but knowing the big yes inside on an intimate level is everything. The divine universe requires nothing but a decision and a plan for you to achieve everything. Being good enough is not an option in my life anymore but being the ‘best’, I am sweetly smiling. This does not mean I am the best at what I do but I do the best I can for myself every time. Saying no when you know that one thing does not fit your priorities in your life. Instead of blindly looking at the IPad or talking to a friend via the Smartphone say no and work at you and your life. You are worth the effort and you are the only one who is the best at being you.

So why did I hate hearing how lucky I was to be an artist? Because it is easy to give up and follow the norm in life, get a real job, work every day mindlessly, get married, have the kids, and you can always paint as a hobby. No I cannot and I tried for years to do just that, failing miserably. I work very hard at my job. This is not easy. This is not fun. This IS fulfilling and purposeful work. Many years of study is applied to a creative work.  Art is serving the soul in each of us. Art speaks to the soul and through the soul it speaks to all creation. It is why people say his or her work speaks to me. I work to feed the creative energy shared by all things. That is the burning ‘yes’ inside every creative person. My work matters, and your work matters. Remember when you head off to the office or to the studio or to the kitchen to tend to your family to do your absolute best and never less. Not THE absolute best, YOUR absolute best.

You can have anything you want if you want it badly enough.

“You can have anything you want if you want it badly enough. You can be anything you want to be, do anything you set out to accomplish if you hold to that desire with singleness of purpose.”

Abraham Lincoln, US President.

Pink Digitalis Watercolor

How many times has some one recently thrown out this mans name and referenced themselves as being like this great man. I am certain Mr. Lincoln would have seen them as men of lesser convictions. Why I say this is because desire to accomplish anything comes for the passion inside you. You might find an individual inspiring and you may admire the person but it is the passion the deep desire to see its’ purpose and to see it to completion. The words I quoted are not just words to be thrown about. We as a world need to absorb these words into our very fiber of being. I think about what this man faced and the turmoil he had to fight through. He did not do it for his ego, which can not be said for the people comparing themselves to Lincoln, he did it for the good of all the people.

I am a spiritualist. I do not practice any religion yet find a closeness to the Buddhist and the Tao. Today there was a gentleman at my door from the Jehovah Witness‘s. I explained I was a Buddhist and he very inquisitively asked about my beliefs. We spent the next 15 minutes talking about the differences and similarities of our beliefs. He knew he would not change my mind about religion and I knew he would not change his yet we were not worlds apart in our thinking. We both want this world to be peaceful joyous and harmonious every where for all things. We want that to be so on my front porch we held that singleness of purpose and accomplished just that, peace and harmony. It was a true joy being in his presence.
